Scarface and Rusi!

Terry-fic pic by Terry Goss.

No don't get too excited.

This is footage from 2010.
We haven't seen Scarface in years and although a very experienced videographer on rebreather reports seeing an enormous Tiger Shark, I fear that she has become the victim of all those pelagic long lines out there. The most interesting bit is at 3:17 where the Bulls, far from being intimidated, are actually shouldering her away.

This brings back many inspiring moments.
Enjoy - with a bit of melancholy!

Artists United for Sharks!

Just got this message from Timbo.

Not bad overall.
And, Ol' Scarface gets her 15 secs of fame

Indeed! :)
Many thanks to everybody - and especially to you my friend!
Story here - and this is the OAS!

Rusi removes a Hook!

This is Doris - the Tiger in the video is Scarface, the small one with the hook Adi.

Interesting video!
The painless intervention is at 0:12 - and there are some shenanigans at 3:00, never to be repeated again! :)

Enjoy!

Scarface from Malaysia!

Stellar portrait by Lill - notice the spiracle?

Despite of my usual reservations: cute PSA from Malaysia!

And!
It features footage of Scarface along with the smaller Adi and our oldest (but not anymore biggest) Bull lady Granma, all from the Fiji Shark Dive on Shark Reef!

<

The bad news: we haven't seen Scarface since November!
No I'm not hinting that something has happened. She was heavily pregnant and may have just gone walkabout to give birth - and judging from what we know from research in the Atlantic and Hawaii, that may have been a long long way away!

But there's also this.
There may just be too many Bulls!
The population of Bulls keeps increasing and we have certainly noticed a corresponding decrease in the number of the other deeper water species like the Nurses, Silvertips and Lemons. My personal explanation for it is that
  • Bulls prey on Sharks and those impressive numbers may just be to high for comfort,
  • as the Bull Shark numbers are ever increasing, I'm observing (and recording) clear signs of inter-specific aggression whereby the Bulls ram and sometimes bite other species of Shark (but not other Bulls!) that compete for the bait, and finally
  • those other Sharks have a much decreased chance of ever approaching the feeder and that they are consequently not being adequately rewarded for the risks they incur
Yes I'm speculating and yes, Juerg is looking into it!

The same is apparently happening to our Tigers.
In the past, the dozen or so Bulls would slink away whenever one of them would turn up - but not anymore! Even Scarface with her impressive 4.5+ meters appears increasingly hesitant whereas the Bulls are becoming positively cocky, to the point where I've recorded them simply shouldering her away!
Yes size matters - but numbers apparently matter more!

And the good news?
There is no such thing as too many Bull Sharks!
After the usual slight dip at the beginning of April, we're back to 50+ individuals on each dive and well on track for my predicted one hundred in June! The last couple of Shark dives have been, hmmm, hectic and as a consequence, we are now strictly enforcing the pit ban, and this also for long term good friends! So if you are eager to take up the wallpaper challenge, make sure to read our protocols as right now, there will be no exceptions - seriously!

And on this happy note: what are you waiting for!

BAD Videos - a Stroll down Memory Lane!

Great pic by Michael - click for detail.

Thank you Schoener Tauchen!

Should you be living in German speaking Europe, this is your dive travel operator of choice.
Big boss Uwe belongs to the who's who of the German dive community and their Swiss outlet is where I booked my one year diving sabbatical in 2001 - and I can attest to the utmost professionalism of the team under boss Robi Frommenwiler and charming office boss Marta. Incidentally, Robi happens to be the brother of Edi, together with Max Ammer the undisputed pioneer of diving in Raja Ampat and Misool, and owner (and builder!) of the legendary Pindito that spawned a whole generation of penisi liveaboards.
Still going strong and still unmatched!

Anyway, they obviously feature BAD in their repertoire.
And more than that, they have recently posted a whole array of videos about The Fiji Shark Dive. To anybody knowing us, it's a whole trip down memory lane, with images of much younger Rusi and Papa, and even of David and Mini! And of course a much smaller and less shredded Scarface - compare the mouth and first dorsal fin!
Glorious times!

Here they are - enjoy!

More about Scarface!

Well, gee Wolfgang!
Thanks for telling Everybody – with friends like you, one sure doesn’t need enemies! :)

Anyway, yes, I really did nearly soil my pants!
Keep in mind that this was in 2003, meaning way before everybody and his dog would flock to Tiger Beach, plus it was our first ever face-to-face encounter. Previously, I had only encountered one big Tiger who chased my out of the water when I took a bucket of fish down on Osprey Reef in 1977, plus I had experienced a few short flybys that were equally totally unexpected, frightening and ultimately, disappointing.

After the encounter, I ran home and sent this to Ron and Val.

So, the tigers are the good guys, huh ... just push them away you said...

(Ron had just sent me a message stating, remember, Tigers are good guys and if he comes too close simply push him away. Bulls are much more dangerous than Tigers.)

Just came out of the water and here's what's happened: the 4.5m tiger turned up at the hand feed, snatched the bin and took it to 30m. There, she tried to get into it but was too big and got all pissed off as there were scores of bulls trying to steal its fish.
Remembering what you had said, I went down with Manasa and Rusi and was peacefully filming away, as she decided to have a go at us. Manasa had a fish and so did Rusi but when she came for me, all I had was the camcorder. She bit it twice and tried to wrestle it away (camera running), after which she then had a serious go for Manasa who had taken back the bin. She was really going for him and he was zipping around that bin trying not to get caught til she finally gave up.
Got it all on camera as well!

The following day, having somewhat calmed down, I wrote well, for panicking or getting aggressive there just wasn't enough time.. all i was trying is to hang on to my housing which was half-way in, monitor and all, with those teeth much too close to my hand holding the handle - and you know how they are, she would have just gobbled it down. It came out pretty rumpled but thanks to Gates, in perfect working condition (and still running).
Re-looking at the tape, I now think that having gotten the fish from Manasa and Rusi, she was assuming that I wanted to give her something as well.

Yes the camera kept running and you can all watch it right here: Papa's dance around the bin at 0:58 and the bite, at the very end at 6:51!

As to Doug’s picture, it is obviously stellar!
This is the very start of the bite and you can see her pushing on the monitor. Doug had what then was the best digital camera (you can see him at the end of the bin dance sequence), but it was slow to recycle and he missed the bite proper – still, to this day, the pic graces the Gates website and they can boast to build Tiger-proof housings!

In terms of size, I am 2m so she was about 4.5 meters long. And she has continued to grow!
Once it became clear that she would become a regular, we named her Scarface after the many scars disfiguring her mouth and exposing her teeth.

Initial encounters were rather problematic, which made for many entries in the Naughty File.
She would continuously try to steal the bin (4:15) and attempt to scare us away by gaping (0:28), which is Tigerese for piss off, this belongs to me, and when we wouldn’t acquiesce but fight back, she would get seriously angry and become outright dangerous, like on 6:31 where she is actively snapping and trying to cause harm.
No mellow and docile here - huggers: learn from it!

We did, abandoned our attempts to steer her with the prods which he hates with a vengeance all the way to wrestling them out of our hands and then spitting them out (3:43) and now keep the food in a large aluminum box that we have dubbed the Rubik’s cube for Tiger Sharks and that her best and incredibly persistent attempts will neither dislodge nor crack.

When it comes to our private and very much personal relationship, it certainly improved - which is easy!
After that first attempt, she never, ever tried to bite the housing again. But on every visit, she would make it a point to pop by and give it a good sniff, resulting in some truly memorable footage. As an example, in one scene (mellow and thus not in the file) she comes from the left and positions herself inches away from the lens; then the whole body behind the head pivots from left to right and finally, she departs back to where she came from, without ever having touched the housing! In other scenes, I would have to lightly push her away, as in 2:40 and 6:08 where it looks like it is her touching the camera.
Stellar stuff!

Since I started lugging around the Boat, matters have alas become a tad more impersonal.
Now, it’s me who has to sneak up on her or position myself close to the feeder, where she barely deigns to acknowledge my presence by giving me a quick glance. Obviously, the size and electronic signature are completely different as the Fathom Imaging lens is one huge piece of inert material – or, horribile dictu, I may just be losing my sex appeal in line with what is happening in my terrestrial existence!
But despite of the snubbing: the love and the excitement will never falter!

Check her out (click to enlarge): here she is straight from the footage 3 days ago, beautiful and quite, but not yet terminally pregnant – meaning that she will stick around for another while before going walkabout, possibly for a couple of months.
So, what are you waiting for…. !!!

As to Wolf wanting to meet her?
I don’t usually share my girls but for him, I’ll make an exception.
He knows that and has long had an open invitation to come dive on the house – with one caveat: he will have to strap on a tank and do it on SCUBA!

So, what’s it gonna be?
DaWolf, will you make a small, insignificant compromise in order to meet a truly wonderful lady? Piece of cake for a waterman like you! Or will you remain the usual stubborn old fart and continue whining about the missed opportunity?

Am I putting you on the spot?
Well, altes Haus: wie Du mir! :)

Hit and run in the Atlantic!

Very interesting!

Once again, some stellar stuff by Guy Harvey & Co.!
I literally stumbled across this plethora of information about Atlantic Ocean Tiger Sharks when googling for the pic of Doc in the previous post. It very much confirms the results from Hawaii insofar that Tigers roam immense ranges spanning thousands of miles. Are they proper territories? Probably not as that would imply that they are defended against conspecifics which does not seem to be the case as most tracks overlap.

The picture that is emerging is that Tigers are basically hit & run predators.
When they are not exploiting regular periodic food aggregations like the Laysan Albatross fledglings in Midway or the Turtle mating sites all across the South Pacific and probably elsewhere, they are always on the move, make a point of turning up at irregular intervals, linger for a while and then carry on. Like this research in Australia's Shark Bay shows (watch the video: cool!), they thus influence the behavior of their prey that never quite knows when they will appear and have to engage in costly avoidance behavior. Check out the research papers (bottom of page) or consult the very good synopsis in Predators as Prey by Oceana, one of the bibles of every Shark lover.
Fascinating stuff!

But what was Correia doing in July, smack in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean (click to view)???
It really is true that the more we learn, the less we know!

Which obviously brings me back to Fiji!
2010 has been an exceptional year for Tigers as so far, they have been around throughout the wet season from January to May and continue to be regular visitors at present.
This is obviously speculative, but we correlate this with this year's El Niño that led to a very dry Summer, meaning that there were no floods when the Tigers are believed to linger closer to the rivers. We're now in a La Niña, meaning that the weather will remain dry but cold until September and then likely become very wet indeed, with heightened risk of flash floods.

In brief: Tigers now, but they may well disappear towards the end of the year!
And again: this is pure speculation as we just do not dispose of enough yearly data sets to correlate our Shark sightings with ENSO!
Meaning that all I've said so far may be totally wrong!

Scarface by the way, being the usual hussy (being aplacental viviparous, she doesn't even have to wait like the other Carcharhinids), has once again gotten herself into trouble and is again very much pregnant and consequently huge - and I mean HUGE!
The way she looks, she'll be leaving us soon to engage in her usual months-long trek to her unknown pupping grounds, something we may well once try to decipher going forward.
Same-same for the big Bull ladies, some of which are are definitely rubicund and accordingly famished!

All-in-all, August diving is just great!
Stellar viz, nice cool weather, plenty of Sharks!
So, what are you waiting for...

Customer Videos!

As always, found by pure chance.

This one is quite typical for January-March, with plenty of Bulls.

And here's one for true Scarface-aholics!
Yes, she is BIG!

Two times lucky!

That would be the Academic College kids!

Check out their Facebook page!
They are currently experiencing lovely weather with stellar viz and heaps upon heaps of Bulls.
Plus, Scarface has paid them a visit not once, but twice! Talk about being lucky! It's actually a karma thing that only happens to good people: as we always say, the big girl sure knows when to make an appearance!

This is the second installment of ATC's Marine Science Program focusing on Shark Behavior and Conservation and from what I can see, it once again looks like a great success and loads of fun on top of that!
Kudos to lecturer Jon McKenzie for being a worthy successor to trail blazer Imogen, and to Lauren for ensuring that all keeps ticking over nicely and above all, safely!

And fingers crossed that Jon's newly discovered Lemon Shark nurseries will be spared! Anybody out there who wants to finance some urgently needed baseline research?

And as always, a big Thank You to the Manifestation of God!

Ripped!

Scarface, by Sasha - click on it!

Yes, believe it or not, we're still waiting for Tomas!
Looks like we may have dodged the bullet as it may pass further to the east - fingers crossed!

Anyway, I was just idly leafing through the web when I came across this remarkable post.
It's old so you may have already seen it: somebody has ripped my Naughty File and boiled it down to a Tiger Shark dive featuring heaps of footage of Scarface! It's completely out of sync but having said that, I must approve of his choice of music - very relaxed and mellow, just like the big lady!

Check it out and then, compare it to the original!

Enjoy!

The VIP

Timbo all dressed up in Fijian regalia on his 60th birthday celebration.

Timbo was born 60 years ago in Minnesota - and the rest is legend.

He's currently in Fiji working on a new project of ours (keep watching this space - this is really cool!) and for days before his birthday, I had been teasing him about Scarface, our BADdest Tiger Shark lady.
Thing is, she has an uncanny knack for always turning up for our most important guests and I kept threatening that we would soon discover whether he was the real deal or just one of those countless posers.

We're in the middle of our sharkiest season and the Bull Shark action is simply breathtaking - but at the same time, this is the time of the year where historically, chances for Tiger sightings have been lowest, as they are widely believed to be moving to the river mouths in order to profit from the frequent floods during the wet season. This being an El Niño year, rainfall has however been dismal so chances were not completely nil.

And guess what: against all odds, Timbo is now confirmed Shark Reef royalty!
She only turned up for a brief visit during the second dive, took a single tuna head and got the hell outta there - but what a sight and what a spectacular confirmation of Timbo's status!

This is a lo-res quick edit of one of Timbo's pics of Scarface.

As to why she's so uncharacteristically shy, opinions vary.
It may be the assertive presence of dozens of hungry Bull Sharks - but I fear that this may well be the direct result of the shenanigans by other people who continue to try and grab, ride and poke her, be it out of misguided love, bravado or outright fear.
A great shame - and at least to us, a clear confirmation of our policy that prohibits any such contacts, well meaning as they may be.

But I'm digressing as usual.
Happy birthday Timbo my friend!

Tiger in Fiji!

Isn't she cute? Yes, it's Scarface - snuggling up to her friend Rusi!
And what a great pic: as anticipated, Lill is getting better and better!

From FiNS Magazine, July 3, 2009.

If you are lucky, you might find yourself diving with a pretty, large female tiger shark on the famous Shark Dive in Fiji, Beqa Lagoon.

She is named “Scarface”, and she has been a regular visitor on the Shark Dive for the last seven to eight years. Everyone is thrilled, both guests and staff, whenever she decides to drop by for a fishhead-snack, along with the 15-40 bull sharks that come in to feed on every dive.

Scarface left this dive site in November last year, heavily pregnant, to give birth somewhere else. She came back on April 27th, after a five-month “maternity leave”, and she’s been around since.

There is no need to be scared if you meet her! She is very sweet, slow and mellow, and she is only there to get her piece of free fish…and to say hello to her old friend, Rusi the Fijian shark feeder, whom she has been around for years.

Some of the other sharks you normally encounter on a day of shark diving include the friendly tawny nurse sharks at 30 meters, the fast-swimming grey reef sharks that come blasting in at ten meters, and finally the whitetip and blacktip reef sharks at around four meters. This last part of the first dive must be the best safety stop ever!

On the second dive of the day, big bulls and sometimes a tiger shark dominate at 16 meters. Occasionally you will also see silvertip sharks and sickle fin lemon sharks on this dive. If you want to experience diving with different types of sharks, this is definitely the place to be.

And then this.
View more pictures from a day of shark-diving in Fiji.

I've asked Lill whether this was really all from just one day she assures me it is.
Very impressive indeed!

The other Camera!

Finally!

I knew Lawrence was behind me when i filmed Rusi's mouth-feed - and here it is, on 1:02!
Love that Hi-def, gotta get me one!

Enjoy!

Airing Right Now!

That would be "South Pacific" on BBC Two!

Yes, with some footage from The Best Shark Dive in the World!
Producer Jonathan Clay and cameraman Richard were with us last year and despite of some very foul weather, they were blessed with a visit by our VIP-enamored Scarface who turned up on both dives and presented Richard with a golden opportunity when she glided in and closely inspected his domeport.

Can't wait to see it!
Entirely filmed in Hi Def, it's once again a production by the BBC Natural History Unit and will undoubtedly contain some epic footage as always! I went on YouTube but so far, there's only this one teaser of a monster wave in slo-mo (and the BBC iPlayer only works in the UK) but judging from that, we're once again in for a real treat!

Apparently, the video versions are due shortly, with the US release renamed into Wild Pacific because of the musical. The funny hing being that after all the recent drama, it's due to air on Discovery! It obviously takes the Brits to show them how to do some decent pro-Nature programs! Isn't life just funny!
And there's another trailer here - featuring a Tiger Shark!
Is it her?

As I read somewhere, Jon is responsible for Part 5 and 6 and I sure hope that we feature in Fragile Paradise! But wherever we are, it's again quite a milestone for our small dive shop.

May many more such great productions follow!
(Oh they will they will!)

PS: "flesh-eating caterpillars"?

Scarface and Rusi

From Sasha's Blog.

Scarface - ultimate 5.5 m long pet of Rusi and the team of Beqa Adventure Divers.
She was absent for five months from the Shark Reef for birth giving, and finally returned again three weeks ago, right on time for my visit to Beqa Lagoon. I was lucky to be on one of the dives then she appeared in all her glory.
There is something surreal, gravity defying in interaction between The Feeders and this ultimate shark which guests have chance to observe - Rusi barehandedly guiding these monster, crouching and jumping around, and strong mental bond between two can be strongly felt even from the distance.
Scarface always inspecting everyone and everything on each of her visits, everyone on the dive has chance to look into the eyes of these gigantic shark from few centimeters away.

In Sasha's English, "barehandedly" translates into "with his hands - protected by a steel mesh glove"! Promise!

Anyway, this gives me the chance of posting the answer to that question: apart from many other peculiarities, Tiger Sharks have a visible spiracle!
Bet that until now, you haven't noticed!

More about Scarface and her favorite feeder very soon!

She's back!

Good girl!!!

We've last seen her in November where she was hugely pregnant.
She came in high, inspected the clients as usual but then circled and circled, clearly interested but never quite motivated enough to sweep in for a snack, to the point where in his frustration, Rusi decided to swim up through the water column and stuff a Tuna head into her mouth. But even then, she wouldn't swallow it but kept it between her teeth, circled once more and swam away.

The way we interpreted it was that she was ready to pop, had developed an according feeding inhibition (Tigers are cannibals and something must prevent the mothers from preying on the pups) and would leave shortly to give birth in some protected habitat. Judging from what we had experienced during her past pregnancies, we ventured the prediction that she would likely abscond for several months - and voilà!
And talk about following some inner clock: last time, she came back on April 24 - this time, on April 27. How cool is that!

Anyway, she finally turned up on Monday and was big, beautiful, mellow and ravenous like always!
Great that she's once again made it back unscathed!

But check her out: all skinny and with a flabby empty stomach! The good news being that there's plenty of space for Tuna heads in there and that we might be seeing much more of her in the days to come! Great for Lill and also, for Sasha who's currently visiting!

By the way, Tigers are unique among the Carcharhinids in being aplacental viviparous, having a caudal keel, having a peculiar inverse-tear-shaped pupil, having can-opener teeth...
And...?

Think: respiration!
First one that gives the correct answer gets a Shark dive for free!

And lemme tell you - if you love Tiger Sharks and haven't noticed...
I can see it in the pic!
