Shark Week - Emma abused?

Patric is asking questions.
He has posted the following video featuring a large Tiger Shark that features abrasions consistent with getting tangled in a cable or rope; a chumsicle that is being held up by a length of metal chain that can injure the animal and contains diving weights that can both break teeth and/or get ingested; a burly dude yanking on the rope, and some blonde bimbette.
Not nice - check it out.

  • The location: Tiger Beach
  • The Shark: Jimmy's beloved Emma
  • The occasion: Shark Week, notorious broadcasters of Shark Porn

  • The yanking dude: Cody Lundin, self professed nature-loving reborn aboriginal Red Indian, or whatever, doing what stupid burly people do when directed to do so.
Did you check out the links?
And here are my own questions to fellow Shark diving operators and conservationists.
  • Are we gonna continue pretending this aint happening?
  • Are we gonna continue watching that shit?
  • Are we the operators gonna continue enabling it?
  • Are we gonna continue giving our business to operators that do?
  • Are we gonna continue associating with those people?
Yes I know I know...

Let me start of by saying that I don't particularly agree with what they do in this video...but...what we all can miss is that the one conservationist is slagging the other of! Instead of trying to teach, as even conservationists need to learn...we get a discussion that would suit the banking world, where people blame each other continuously. I have seen footage of many many operaters, who made "mistakes" including footage of BAD...that doesn't mean all things you do are faulty...maybe if conservationists would work together, reaching a common goal, "saving sharks", will be a possibility. It's not a popularity race between sharkdiveoperaters...or is it???

Yes Johnny, we all make mistakes.

This is however about people who are hardly conservationists and have a long and well documented track record of making those "mistakes" on purpose and for money.
This was not accidental, this was scripted.

Oh and BTW touche', I am a retired banker! :)

I know that you are a retired banker...in itself not a "mistake" (-; Well, as said, I don't agree with the way they act in this docu...but in my view, that's where we, as difficult as it is, will have to teach and teach again. And don't get me wrong...there's many things to get angry about, but however we did learn that anger itself doesn't really solve anything. The "killer" for all of us will be when within sharkconservationism we don't agree upon how to save sharks and other marinelife.

I hear you - that's my way of teaching, the banker way! :)

This is not about conservation, this about the shark diving industry and about Shark media, and the continued shenanigans perpetrated by some people.

I also disagree with your assessment that we should not discuss in a robust way among conservationists.
There's so much rubbish, misinformation and misguided hyperbole going around in"our" circles that those of us who advocate pragmatic and science based solutions must distance ourselves from that nonsense.
If not, we get lumped in with the Shark whacks, lose all credibility and are unable to engage in any constructive dialogue with the authorities etc - see my latest rant!

Re: the "facts" you "know".
Would you by any chance be this Johnny B: http://www.facebook.com/Katherine.Reed.sngrmnsthsm/posts/177049909019751 ?

If so, you may want to check your sources.
You won't believe me so read http://echeng.com/travel/fiji2004/pacificharbour/.

The staff were "robbed" by the second Aquatrek who then became BAD.
At the time, I was not a shareholder nor did I pay anything, I was trying to establish SRMR.

The robbers?
Shareholders James Beazeley and Les Fields, plus dive shop manager Brandon Paige - may I trust that the irony has not escaped you?

As life has it, James and Les fell out, Brandon resigned and I became a shareholder one year later.

As to why we call ourselves "The Best Shark Dive in the World"?
Because Ron and Valerie Taylor say we are!

Tjeeeeezzzz...How long are you already an exbanker??? You still react as uptight as one...I was not at all talking about that subject, but then you came to prove exactly that what I stated in my first response...??? So I guess it is about who's the coolest sharkdiver after all!!! You see Mike, if you cannot get along with your fellow sharkdiveoperater on the same island and badtalk every chance you get, forgetting to put sharkconservation first, how can you condemn other operaters, that they are in it for the money? You make me doubt if we are on the same team? Are we looking out for sharks and will we by all means try to educate people, or are we going to see who looks coolest doing it???

Badtalk? Where, exactly?

Nah, just pointing out that if u want to credibly preach universal peace & harmony, u shud maybe refrain from engaging in stupid stereotypes and unsubstantiated mudslinging first?

Whatever, right?

There's a whole lotta folks who will let pass "bad things with sharks" because of friendships and a misguided sense of loyalty.

This is a rubber-hits-the-road kind of moment here and once again because of friendships and loyalties no one cares about this animal.

So be it.

If we all claim to know what Shark Porn is, then this is a new evolution in SP. When animals can be essentially mauled for television and those who spend a lot of their time acting as the shark guardians sit by and do nothing.

Wow.

Wow indeed

But as u undoubtedly know, there's been a lot of buzz behind the scenes that will hopefully translate into something tangible - but then again, who knows.

In a society where any form of straight talk is frowned upon because, god forbid, somebody may get offended, I'm actually not that hopeful.

Much safer to bow to political correctness and continue the underhanded whispering and backstabbing huh.

This does seem to be the way many would like it to be.
