Basking Sharks!

Source

Wow, wow, wow - that's really all I got to say.

Basking Sharks in Kilkee.
Video courtesy of Chloe Ryan.
This video was posted to show the beauty Kilkee and West Clare on the Wild Atlantic Way.
Together as a collective we promote a place close to all of our hearts both at home and away. A place that many of us once called home.
Thank you Chloe for sharing the video with us.
Keep well and keep safe from the Covid-19 Virus.

Amazing huh.
You can experience those fantastic Basking Sharks by booking a trip with Basking Shark Scotland, a fellow member of GSD.

Shark Eco Tourism in South Africa - Action Alert!

Please read this.

Wilfred is one of the real good ones.
His venerable Marine Dynamics stand at the forefront of South Africa's Shark Conservation, Tourism and Research and as such has been nominated to be the only GSD member from that region.

With that in mind, please sign this petition.
Contrary to many others, this one is very much linked to action on the ground whereby your signature will most certainly assist the local Shark diving operators in making their point when they will meet with the local authorities.
More here.

This is urgent.
Please, do sign, and re-post on your social media.

Thank You.

Beqa Lagoon?

Click for detail!

BUT!
Fiji's first National Marine Park, the Shark Reef Marine Reserve where we conduct our Shark dive is located on the fringing reef of the Southern coast of Fiji's largest island, Viti Levu - not in Beqa Lagoon which is an atoll in the South of us, see the image at the top.
Now you know!

And BTW: what about the other featured destinations?
Most are equally being serviced by members of Global Shark Diving, i.e. Tiger Beach by Jimmy and Epic Diving; Cocos by Undersea Hunter; Kleinbaai next to Gansbaai by Marine Dynamics; the Hebrides by Basking Shark Scotland; Malapascua by Divelink Cebu; Osprey by Mike Ball; Guadalupe (and Socorro!) by Nautilus; Jupiter by Jimmy; and finally, Playa by Phantom. And when you come diving with any of us, you will be given a card entitling you to discounts with everybody else.

So, what are you waiting for.
The best operators in the best destinations await you!

Shout Out!

Watch this.

So here's the deal.
Mike Lever of GSD member Nautilus Liveaboards is traveling to Israel in order to participate in this year's edition of the Silence of the Sharks, and he is offering a gift certificate worth a whopping 1,800 bucks to any diver willing to travel there with him; plus, he has launched a children's poster competition.
Details here.

Having been asked to re-post, I'm happy to oblige.
I do this because Mike is a good man; because Nautilus Liveaboards is an awesome operator and member of GSD; because organizer David Pilosof is one of the few remaining mossbacks and deserves our respect; and yes, because the whole shebang features some pals, will likely cause no harm and is even likely to do a little bit of good.

So there you have it - do with it what you want! :)

PS: the  event has been postponed.

Basking Shark Research!

And from us, too! :)

Watch.

Yes this would be Basking Shark Scotland.
Obviously, they are a proud member of Global Shark Diving, your global alliance of responsible and long-term sustainable Shark diving operators, and it is great to see how they are translating our guiding principles into action on the ground. This is the peak tourism season, and I really do invite you to travel there and give them your business, as every penny will contribute to their conservation and research efforts.

Anyway, great stuff - enjoy!

Welcoming Friends!

Great fun!

Behold Jorge El Chino Loría and his badass jefa Elena La Táfana!
For new readers of this blog: Chino is the big boss of Phantom Divers, and they in turn are a member of GSD, your one stop shop for responsible, safe and long term sustainable Shark diving across the globe!

I must say, I respect the man enormously.
Over the past years, he and the outstanding team of SOS under the leadership of Luis Lombardo have invested a huge amount of time and money into completely turning around the situation in Playa del Carmen from a huge problem (scroll down to the earliest posts in the link) to a huge win for everybody whereby this has now become a world famous Shark diving destination with a cohesive Shark diving industry with its own code of conduct, and where the Sharks are finally being protected.

Anyway, we're having a great time.
We're also hosting Martin of Shark Diver, and the dives and conversations are simply stellar = I can already say that the networking will undoubtedly lead to new initiatives and more cooperation, and to renewed solidarity vis-a-vis the latest irritating meddling (and e.g. here!) by our detractors.

And the big question?
How do the Fiji Bull Sharks compare with the Caribbean Sardines?

Go to Playa and ask Chino!

Tiburón Toro!

For our Spanish speaking friends.

This is great.
Featuring the Playa Sardines, the fantastic Saving our Sharks with its director Luis Lombardo and of course Chino and his unequaled Phantom Divers, a proud member of GSD.
Much like the local authorities that have finally acknowledged the many years of hard, visionary work, I remain deeply impressed by the continuous excellent progress.
Well done my friends, I'm really proud of 'ya!

Anyway - enjoy!

Divelink Cebu join Global Shark Diving!

Source.

Watch - story here.

Nice.
Dennis did then travel to the CITES CoP and the rest, as they say is history. From what I understand, the listing has since led to the full protection of the Threshers within the Philippines.

Dennis works for Divelink Cebu.
Clearly the top of the crop when it comes to diving with those fantastic Pelagic Threshers off Malapascua Island, this admirable locally owned dive shop is at the origin of local marine conservation NGO Project Sharklink,  has organized local fishermen to patrol and protect Monad Shoal and conducts stellar research together with Simon Oliver's  Thresher Shark Research and Conservation Project.
They are everything we could ever wish for in a member of GSD, and we are proud and thankful that they have agreed to join our ranks.

Welcome aboard!

Next candidate?
Ideally, they should be hailing from the tropical Indian Ocean or the Red Sea - and they need to meet our three guiding principles!
Any suggestions please right here!

Mexican Caribbean Biosphere Reserve!

Source.

Great news!

Read this.
Looks like Playa's Sharks and especially, their habitat are about to be protected, meaning that the petition by Saving our Sharks has equally been successful. Quintana Roo has been experiencing an explosion of only partly controlled tourism, and this measure could not have come soon enough.

And the Shark tourism activities?
There, too, news are excellent as it appears that like in Guadalupe, baited Shark diving will be tolerated within the Biosphere but only provided that the operators adhere to the code of conduct and possibly, that they join and thus contribute to the efforts by Saving our Sharks.

Bingo.
This once again goes to show that given the necessary leadership, responsible dive operators can make a huge difference. As a reminder, Shark diving in Playa and the push to protect them have all started with Chino Loria and Phantom Divers - and the rest as they say is history.

Obviously, Phantom Divers are a member of Global Shark Diving, you global alliance of responsible and long-term sustainable Shark diving operators.

Well done!

Playa Sardines!

Charlie with one of his girls. Source.

So, I finally went diving with the Caribbean Sardines.

It was great.
Of course I dove with  GSD member Phantom Divers and I must really say that Chino has created an awesome slick, professional, fun and above all, very safe Shark diving machine that is among the best I've experienced anywhere - and yes, witnessing Charlie, and Ramón with their babies has been a special privilege.

Plus, progress on the conservation front has been simply stellar.
Under the leadership of its new full time director Luis Lombardo, Saving our Sharks is progressing from strength to strength, with more than 40 dive shops and dozens of boat captains observing the code of conduct and contributing funds, with substantial money going to fishermen in exchange for not fishing Sharks, with continued research and public presentations by Shark researchers, and with massive outreach to the public and to schools.
Bravo!

And then there was that remarkable tooth.
A present by Ramón who collected it right in front of me, it looks totally different from any Bull Shark tooth we've ever found here in Fiji - and trust me, we've found a few!
It's the tooth on the left, together with two large Fijian ones - and considering that those Caribbean Bulls are a distinct genetic population with individuals that are notably smaller than those in the central Pacific, its size is simply spectacular. But then again, those are Mexican Sharks - small in size but packing a mighty punch! :)
Click for detail!

Anyway, nice to be home again.
It's the low season when the pregnant Bulls travel to the rivers to pup whilst the others are getting ready for mating and in turn appear to lose their appetite for juicy Tuna heads - but we've got heaps of other Sharks, and this also gives us a chance to focus on the countless Fishes.
It's already hot hot hot - so here's to a tropical depression to suck away some of the heat, as parts of Fiji are already experiencing dangerously hot surface waters.

But that's the topic of another post.
To be continued!

Baiting and feeding Sharks - good or bad?

Oh for crying out loud!

After those two incidents, the shit has hit the fan.
Out of many, read this defense by Martin, and then this and this by some ultracrepidarian chick at Nat Geo, and this misleading piece (the Nautilus did not break, but did certainly bend the rules correction: the video evidence now shows otherwise; and the Solmar has a history like many others) by some other ultracrepidarian chick on Earth Touch News.

Nah don't worry.
I'm not going there - but if you really care, feel free to consult my 50-odd posts on the subject. Or if you cannot stomach that, simply do re-read this one from 4 years ago.

Just this.
Burgess needs to comb the data he has been hoarding for decades and come up with evidence about a causal connection between Shark provisioning and unprovoked, let alone predatory Shark strikes. There is none - but until then, he really needs to shut the fuck up. Pavlov my ass - or did those dogs bite and devour unsuspecting bystanders?

Yes the Shark diving industry needs to always improve.
Provisioning has effects, albeit overwhelmingly (!) only locally and temporarily, and those effects need to be identified, investigated, understood and then mitigated and managed. Our best players know that and have started to associate in order to promote a more long-term sustainable product; and the others need to reform and failing that, they need to be exposed - and now there is a public tool for that.
So don't whine - rate!

And finally.
We are not the problem.
Commercial and recreational overfishing, climate change, ocean acidification, pollution and habitat destruction are. But we are certainly part of the solution - even the worst ones among us!
So go barking there, not here!

End of rant!

Epic Diving join Global Shark Diving!

Epic - literally!
When it comes to Bahamian Shark diving, Debra and Vincent may be the new kids on the block - but contrary to others who continue to regale us with fake Shark conservation media featuring the latest batch of pink-clad bimbettes, the Canabals don't talk from both sides of the mouth but have instead pursued a strategy of combining solid ecotourism with Shark conservation, research and education from the get go. What I particularly like is how they've managed to completely turn around the image of the once much reviled Oceanic Whitetip, a highly assertive species that was widely thought to be completely unsuitable for tourism, let alone for diving without cages - and yes on that point, yours truly stands totally corrected!
So very well done, and welcome to the team!

And now we are ten.
I can say with absolute certainty that when it comes to Shark ecotourism, these operators are truly the best of the best - meaning that finding new candidates that fulfill all of our guiding principles is becoming increasingly challenging, the more as each of our members and ambassadors can unilaterally veto any proposal. Personally, I'd like to see the next member hailing from the Indopacific, ideally Asia - but it ain't gonna be easy!

Suggestions?
Check out the above principles and if you know of anybody, tell us here!

Barbican Shark Diving Challenge!

Hah!

Looks like Ozzie Sam has been having some fun!
This post informs us that he did some drone work, obviously from Andrew's boat where over the years, he has become sort of a fixed asset.

Nice - and nice overall messaging!
Which comes at no surprise as Andrew is a member of GSD!
Enjoy!

Phantom Divers join Global Shark Diving!

Behold!

Needless to say that I'm elated.
Ever since I started blogging, about the then problems in Playa del Carmen, e.g. here, Chino and his group of passionate Shark divers at Phantom Divers have been advancing in leaps and bounds.
Thanks to the remarkable progress both in terms of conservation but also protocols, Playa is now  among the very best and most sustainable Shark diving destinations anywhere. This has taken an enormous effort both personally but also very much financially, and I must really commend them for their unwavering tenacity and passion.
So welcome aboard my dear friends - this is highly welcome and highly deserved!

GSD will of course continue expanding, albeit slowly.
We are really fully beholden to our mission and principles, meaning that potential candidates need to undergo a  rigorous vetting process where they must above all document a proven track record in every single one of our principles - and lemme tell you, with every candidacy requiring the consensus by all members, that is a tall order indeed!

But, we're already working on the next candidacy!
Onward and Upward!

HT: Eli, for having made the introductions. Thanks brother! :)

Howard - Winged Giants!

Stunning as always!

These are the Revillagigedo Islands.
GSD Ambassadors Howard and Michele were diving off Nautilus' brand new and luxurious flagship, the Nautilus Belle Amie. Of interest, the orange Angelfish cleaning the Pelagic Mantas are the endemic Clarion Angelfish.

Enjoy!
